In a “Wah Off” to decide the biggest abuser of the wah-wah pedal, Kirk Hammett of Metallica fame and actor/novice musician David Hanbury battled it out last night in Columbia, S.C. Billed as the “Cry Baby Battle Royale” Hanbury, in the guise of his alter ego; “Mrs. Smith” proved more than a match for Hammett. Kirk, who has been cited for his use (and at times over-use) of the wah pedal on Metallica recordings, was challenged by Hanbury to determine who was the worst abuser of the effect. The winner would be awarded the Crybaby “Champion of the Overuse of the Cry Baby wah-wah Pedal.”
The two hilariously duked it out via guitars over the theme from the movie “Shaft” as shown below:
In the end, Hammett “forfeited” and “Mrs. Smith” won the challenge, stating upon her receiving of the Crybaby trophy that “I learned it all from watching you.” No pies were thrown either by or at the winner.
So who do you think won the battle and who got the “Shaft?”
What’s your favorite song to play the wah-wah pedal to?
